Slay the Spire has really heralded the birth of subgenre of roguelike card games that are here to stay, even if some Spire-likes aren't terribly innovative. There are also quite a few clones popping up on Steam lately, to the point there's some discussion of it becoming its own little sub-genre. Last month we also had a chance to preview Nowhere Prophet, which I called a "Dustpunk Spire-like," much to the chagrin of the developer, who had been working on it long before he even heard about Slay the Spire. They were our main inspirations, but we were definitely inspired by the look of Slay the Spire. Baten Kaitos was a big one, for example, as well as Fate/Grand Order and Mega Man: Battle Network. there are a few other games that served as inspirations. The way the cards are laid out is similar, the UI, etc.
There’s definitely some influence there, yeah. So, I’ve seen a lot of that game and I’ve talked to our designers about it. One could marvel at the artwork, creatures, and actions depicted on these cards, but they could also craft them into devious decks highlighting certain. This might surprise you, but I actually don’t play a lot of video games myself.
